8. Explain Your International Status Honestly
This is especially important when applying for jobs abroad.
There are several possibilities.
You already have work authorization
If you already have legal authorization to work in the destination country, you can state that clearly.
For example:
I currently hold valid authorization to work in Canada.
Only make this statement if it is true.
You require employer sponsorship
If the job advertisement specifically offers sponsorship and you require it, you can state:
I am currently based outside Canada and would require employer support for the applicable work authorization process.
Keep the wording factual.
Do not write:
I need you to sponsor my visa because I desperately want to move to Canada.
The cover letter should remain professional.
The employer has not mentioned sponsorship
Do not automatically assume that the company sponsors international workers.
Research the vacancy and employer first.
For example, Canada’s Job Bank warns that people outside Canada cannot apply for every job listed because many employers require applicants to already have authorization to work in Canada.
The same principle applies to jobs in other countries: a vacancy being posted online does not automatically mean the employer recruits workers from abroad.
9. Explain Why You Want to Work for the Company
A good cover letter should show that you researched the employer.
You can mention:
- A specific company project
- The organization’s industry
- Its products or services
- Its mission
- A recent expansion
- The responsibilities described in the vacancy
The UK’s National Careers Service recommends researching the employer and showing that you understand the company and position.
Avoid excessive flattery.
You do not need to write:
Your company is the greatest organization in the world.
Instead:
I am interested in joining ABC Logistics because of its focus on regional distribution and its growing operations across Western Canada.
That sounds more credible.
10. Write a Strong Closing Paragraph
The closing paragraph should be short.
You can:
- Reconfirm your interest
- Mention your availability
- Thank the employer
- Invite further discussion
For example:
I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my commercial driving experience and safety record could contribute to your transportation team. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
The National Careers Service recommends thanking the employer and indicating that you look forward to hearing from them.
11. Choose the Correct Sign-Off
If you addressed the recipient by name, a traditional formal closing is:
Yours sincerely,
If you used a generic greeting such as “Dear Sir or Madam,” the traditional British convention is:
Yours faithfully,
In international applications, however, “Kind regards” or “Sincerely” may also be appropriate depending on the country’s business culture and the tone of the application.
Cover Letter Format for Jobs Abroad
A simple format is usually more effective than a heavily designed document.
